Spain Boosts Democratic Memory Efforts with Youth Campaign and Yeserías Prison Designation

The Spanish Government’s Secretariat of State for Democratic Memory announced that the "Dmocracia" communication campaign has a maximum budget of €386,000, of which €185,215 covers production and €193,900 is earmarked for social‑media diffusion. No funds were paid to platform owners; instead, 32 young content creators will promote the campaign, which has already reached over 4 million views and more than 600 000 people, most under 35. The campaign uses a limited‑edition clothing line designed by artist Bnomio to convey democratic values to younger audiences.

Separately, the Official State Gazette published the government's decision to open a procedure to declare the former Yeserías prison in Madrid a "Lugar de Memoria Democrática". The site, now the Victoria Kent Social Insertion Centre, housed thousands of female political prisoners during the Franco regime. Associations of former inmates have pushed for the designation to preserve a historic reminder of gender‑specific political repression and to educate future generations about the dictatorship’s abuses.
