Spain Democratic Memory and Dmocracia disputes

Overview

In early July 2026 the Constitutional Court suspended the Balearic Parliament’s repeal of the 2018 Memory and Democratic Recognition Act, keeping the law in force while a government‑filed challenge from 9 June is examined. National leaders praised the decision as a defence of victims’ rights, while Vox accused Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of ignoring a democratically taken regional vote and the Balearic PP downplayed the issue.

The Secretariat of State for Democratic Memory launched the “Dmocracia” communication campaign with a €386,000 budget. Thirty‑two young content creators promoted the initiative, which quickly gathered over four million views, especially among audiences under 35, and was supported by a limited‑edition clothing line designed by artist Bnomio. The Official State Gazette began the procedure to declare the former Yeserías prison a “Lugar de Memoria Democrática”. On 9 July Vox filed a trademark application for the phrase “Dmocracia. Cuando te vistes, te posicionas”, sparking a dispute over the use of public funds for the promotional clothing line and highlighting partisan tensions around the 50th anniversary of Spain’s democracy.

On 13 July the centre‑right People’s Party announced plans to repeal the Democratic Memory Law, arguing it should prevent the pro‑Basque party Bildu from shaping the narrative on ETA terrorism. Four days later the government officially recognized the historic police building at 43 Via Laietana in Barcelona as a Democratic Memory Site.

On 31 July the government commissioned a new youth clothing line under the Dmocracia brand, handing design work to a social‑media influencer. The slogan “When you dress, you position yourself” – a play that removes the letter “E” from “democracia” – drew criticism for perceived superficiality, while supporters argued the initiative could modernise public outreach and better engage young Spaniards.
