Spain completes 24.7 million‑euro tunnel modernisation on A‑6 linking Bierzo and Galicia

Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Mobility Sustainable has finished a €24.7 million modernisation programme on the A‑6 motorway tunnels that connect the Bierzo region with Galicia. The works covered three tunnels in the Bierzo (Trabadelo, La Escrita and Villafranca) and six tunnels in Lugo province (Neira, Cereixal, Doncos, San Pedro, Piedrafita and the Montefurado tunnel on the N‑120).

Funding came from €18.3 million of European Union Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan funds and €6.4 million of national resources. Upgrades include new ventilation and smoke‑extraction systems, modern fire‑protection equipment, emergency lighting, pressurised evacuation galleries, video‑surveillance, variable‑message signs, and a control centre for real‑time monitoring. The completed tunnels now meet EU safety standards for the trans‑European road network.
