Spain transport infrastructure upgrades

Overview

Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility continues extensive infrastructure upgrades. Key railway developments include ADIF awarding a €4.1 million contract for Granada station redesign, drafting projects for the Bobadilla–Algeciras line, and executing electrification for the Málaga–Sevilla high-speed link. Additionally, gauge conversion work has been tendered for the Mediterranean Corridor, and the Alicante–Elche railway variant has cleared environmental studies.

Road projects include the approval of an N-320 highway variant near Guadalajara, a €952 million overhaul study for the N-430 corridor, and the design of a new A-58 autovía. The A-74 coastal highway in Lugo and a new Tremor viaduct on the A-6 have also received technical approval. While the A-15 tunnel upgrades in Gipuzkoa and the A-5 underground project in Madrid are nearing completion, other projects face challenges; the A-11 highway opening has been delayed, and the Gijón Carlos Marx viaduct demolition has stalled.

Maintenance remains intensive. The A-6 between León and Lugo faces phased closures through October, and the AP-66 Negrón tunnel requires modernization through November. The A-8 and A-64 in Asturias continue summer lane closures for tunnel safety upgrades. In Almería, maintenance on the A-7 and A-92 continues through July. Recent completions include the €24.7 million modernization of A-6 tunnels linking Bierzo and Galicia and the A-15 tunnel upgrades in Gipuzkoa.
