Spain confirms Shamonda virus in cattle farms in Córdoba and Toledo

Spain's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) has confirmed the detection of Shamonda virus type 1 in seven cattle farms across the provinces of Córdoba and Toledo. The findings were verified by the Central Veterinary Laboratory (LCV) in Algete.

Symptoms in affected livestock include high fever, diarrhea, and a reduction in milk production, typically ranging between 10% and 20%. While the virus can cause high morbidity, most adult animals appear to recover, and no mortality has been reported thus far. The virus, which belongs to the Orthobunyavirus genus and is primarily transmitted by culicoides midges, has recently been identified in several European countries, including Switzerland, Germany, and France.

Authorities have stated that the virus is not a zoonosis and that no restrictive measures are required at this time. Surveillance remains ongoing as officials analyze additional clinical suspicions in other regions of Spain.
