Spain confronts rising youth anxiety and suicide rates

Data from the Catalan Health Inequalities Observatory show that diagnoses of anxiety disorders among people aged 16‑29 have risen steadily since 2019, affecting about 9 % of this group. In the same period, suicide has become the leading cause of death for young people in the region. The increase is linked to deteriorating material conditions, with low wages and soaring housing costs that consume up to 98 % of a typical young worker’s salary. Union membership remains at a historic low of 12.5 % nationwide, especially among the youngest workers.

In response, the first Youth Suicide Prevention Day will be held in Alcoi on 13 October 2026. The eight‑hour, in‑person event targets teachers, school counsellors and other education professionals, offering training on risk‑factor identification, early‑warning signs and emotional support strategies. Organized by CEFIRE, the conference aims to strengthen coordination between schools, families and specialised services.

These developments underscore growing concerns about youth mental health in Spain and the push for collective, institutional action.
