Spain Congress admits proposal for early retirement without pension penalties
The Spanish Congress has admitted for processing a legislative proposal that would allow workers with at least 40 years of social security contributions to access early retirement without facing pension reductions.
The initiative, proposed by the Mixto Parliamentary Group following suggestions from Podemos, aims to eliminate the financial penalties currently applied to those who retire before the standard legal age. On September 22, 2026, the measure was admitted to processing with 178 votes in favor, 33 against, and 136 abstentions.
While the proposal marks a significant step in the legislative process, it does not take effect immediately. Current Social Security regulations remain in force, meaning any early retirement prior to the legal age continues to be subject to adjustments based on the months of advancement and accumulated contributions.
