Spain deploys 2,700 responders and foreign aid to combat Madrid‑Ávila wildfires
The Spanish central government has mobilised a total of 2,737 emergency personnel, 426 land vehicles and 21 aerial assets to fight the forest fires raging in the Community of Madrid and the province of Ávila. The deployment includes 1,201 members of the Unidad Militar de Emergencias (UME) with 405 ground assets, 1,085 Guardia Civil agents with 60 vehicles and two helicopters, 220 National Police agents, 110 Civil Protection staff, and specialised forces from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition (103 people, four BRIF brigades, eleven aircraft and eight helicopters). President Pedro Sánchez inspected the advanced command post in Cenicientos during the operation.
Greece and Italy have each dispatched two Canadair CL‑415 water‑bombing aircraft (four in total) under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised the firefighters on social media. Poland is sending 105 firefighters to assist Spanish crews from 1 August. The regional government of Galicia has also sent additional crews, helicopters, bulldozers and other equipment to support Castilla y León, Madrid and Ávila.
The government still awaits delivery of fifteen Airbus A400M aircraft equipped with fire‑fighting kits that were promised earlier. Meanwhile, commentators have highlighted institutional shortcomings in the coordination between the state and Spain’s autonomous communities during the emergency.
