Spain designates Campo de Aragón as Democratic Memory Site, honors Franco‑era victims

The Spanish government has begun the procedure to recognize the Campo de Aragón in Ourense as a Lugar de Memoria Democrática, acknowledging the 133 locals executed there between 1936 and 1939, the largest repression in Galicia during the Civil War. The designation was announced in the BOE and highlighted by historian Fernando Martínez López, who said the act restores the dignity of the victims and their families.

In Soria, the association Recuerdo y Dignidad delivered the identified remains of eight victims exhumed from the Las Casas cemetery, part of an ongoing forensic effort that has already identified more than 600 people killed or disappeared under Franco’s regime. Families attended the ceremony, recalling decades‑long searches and emphasizing the importance of remembrance and reparations. Both actions form part of a broader state initiative to locate, identify, and publicly honor victims of the Franco dictatorship across Spain.
