Spain discusses new childcare benefits and maternity tax deductions
In Spain, discussions regarding financial support for families are unfolding through both existing tax mechanisms and new legislative proposals. Under current regulations, parents can request an advance payment of the maternity deduction via Form 143 through the Spanish Tax Agency. This allows for a monthly payment of 100 euros for each child under the age of three, rather than waiting for the annual income tax return.
Additionally, the Minister of Youth and Childhood, Sira Rego, has formally proposed a new universal childcare benefit to the Ministry of Finance. This proposal suggests a monthly payment of 200 euros per child for dependents aged zero to 18, regardless of household income. The initiative aims to combat child poverty, which currently affects one in three minors in Spain. According to UNICEF data, such a measure could lift approximately 530,000 children out of poverty.
