Spain electric vehicle charging infrastructure deployment slows
Spain's electric vehicle charging infrastructure is experiencing a significant slowdown in deployment. According to the third-quarter 2026 Electromobility Barometer by Anfac, the country added 1,393 new charging points between July and September, a 2.5% increase from the previous quarter. However, the total number of points installed from January to September stands at 5,003, which is only 37.4% of the volume recorded during the same period in 2025.
Spain's infrastructure index currently sits at 15.9 points, approximately half of the European Union average of 31.5. The country ranks behind Italy and is comparable to the Czech Republic and Hungary in terms of network development. While the total public network has reached 58,075 points, Anfac warns that 17,965 points—roughly 23.6% of the total—are currently out of service due to malfunctions, poor condition, or connection delays.
Regionally, Castilla-La Mancha holds the second-highest position in Spain for charging points, surpassed only by Navarra. Regarding technical specifications, high-power charging stations (150 kW or higher) account for 11.4% of the total network, though they represented one-third of new installations during the third quarter. Anfac has called on public administrations to expedite bureaucratic processes and electrical connection permits to improve the network's functionality.
