Spain electric vehicle charging infrastructure faces operational gaps

While Spain's public charging network continues to expand, a significant portion of installed infrastructure remains unusable. According to data from AEDIVE and ANFAC, there were 53,373 operational charging points as of October 1, 2026, representing a 6.74% increase from the previous year. However, approximately 17,965 installed points are currently non-operational, accounting for 23.6% of the total infrastructure.

These inactive points are due to various factors, including equipment malfunctions, poor maintenance, or technical completion without connection to the electrical distribution grid. The number of non-operational points has risen from 17,073 at the end of the first quarter of 2026 to nearly 18,000 in recent months.

In contrast to these systemic challenges, Iberdrola bp pulse has launched a new ultra-fast charging hub in San Cibrao das Viñas, Galicia. Designed to support the electrification of heavy transport, the facility features eight charging points powered by 100% renewable energy. The hub includes two points for heavy vehicles and six for light vehicles, both capable of 600 kW output, allowing trucks to recharge in under an hour.
