Spain electricity prices drop 9% following four-year peak
Wholesale electricity prices in Spain fell by approximately 9% on Wednesday, October 21, following a significant spike on Tuesday that reached levels not seen since 2022. The average pool price for the day was reported at 195.52 euros per megawatt-hour, down from 215.11 euros the previous day.
Despite the lower daily average, price volatility remains high. Two specific hourly slots were expected to exceed 400 euros per megawatt-hour, creating a gap of more than 300 euros between the most expensive and cheapest periods. This disparity is attributed to a system with high cheap generation capacity but limited flexibility during peak demand.
For consumers on the regulated PVPC tariff, the impact is asymmetrical. Those who shift consumption to midday hours may see lower costs, while those consuming during evening or night periods will face higher rates due to the reliance on expensive backup generation during those windows.
