Spain electricity prices rise as August bills hit four-year high

Electricity costs in Spain are seeing significant fluctuations and increases. For August 2026, the average electricity bill for a standard user under the regulated PVPC tariff is projected to reach 101.23 euros, marking a 17.3% increase compared to the previous year and the highest level in four years, according to FACUA-Consumidores en Acción.

On Friday, August 21, the average wholesale price of electricity is 113.98 €/MWh. Daily rates vary significantly by hour, with the lowest price recorded between 15:00 and 16:00 at 0.03503 €/kWh, and the highest between 21:00 and 22:00 at 0.3397 €/kWh.

Several factors contribute to these costs, including international gas prices, carbon dioxide emission rights, and increased consumption due to heatwaves and air conditioning use. FACUA has called for a permanent reduction in VAT for electricity and a move away from the marginalist auction system.
