Spain electricity prices rise as average bills exceed 100 euros

Electricity prices in Spain are seeing significant fluctuations and an overall upward trend for August 2026. According to calculations by the consumer association FACUA, the average monthly bill for users on the regulated PVPC tariff is projected to reach 101.23 euros. This marks the first time in four years that the average bill has exceeded the 100-euro threshold, representing a 17.3% increase compared to August 2025.

On Wednesday, August 19, the average wholesale price of electricity was recorded at 127.55 €/MWh. Daily rates varied significantly by time slot, with the lowest price occurring between 15:00 and 16:00 at 0.02464 €/kWh, while the peak price reached 0.33022 €/kWh between 21:00 and 22:00.

The rise in costs is attributed to two primary drivers: the increased cost of gas in international markets—influenced by geopolitical tensions affecting oil and gas routes—and higher domestic consumption driven by the intensive use of air conditioning during heatwaves. Additionally, the rising value of CO2 emission rights continues to impact market pricing.
