Spain electricity wholesale prices drop amid solar production peaks

Electricity wholesale prices in Spain have experienced significant fluctuations, including a sharp decline of over 41% in a single day. During certain periods, prices dropped to zero euros per megawatt-hour between 12:00 and 16:00, driven largely by high photovoltaic production meeting demand during midday hours.

Despite these wholesale drops, the impact on domestic consumers remains limited. The regulated tariff (PVPC) has averaged significantly higher than the wholesale reference, as household exposure to the midday price troughs is restricted to those who shift high-energy activities to those specific hours.

Broader market trends continue to be influenced by international gas prices and the cost of CO2 emission rights, which affect combined-cycle power plants and overall market tension.
