Spain electricity prices surge as August bills rise 20%

Electricity prices in Spain are experiencing significant volatility and rising costs for consumers. For users on the regulated PVPC tariff, bills in August have surged by more than 20% compared to the same period last year. An average consumer is seeing costs rise to approximately 61.33 euros for the first 21 days of the month, up from 50 euros in 2025. This increase is driven by high demand during heatwaves and rising natural gas prices.

Wholesale market prices show extreme fluctuations throughout the day. While solar production can drive prices to near zero or even negative values during midday hours (such as between 13:00 and 16:00), costs spike sharply in the evenings. For instance, prices can reach over 160 or 200 euros per MWh during the night when gas-fired combined cycle plants become the primary source of generation.

Regional variations and specific consumption patterns also impact costs. In Menorca, electricity demand rose by nearly 14% in July due to intense heat. Additionally, the expiration of certain VAT reductions has contributed to higher final bills for households.
