Spain emphasizes blood donation needs and transplant patient care

In Spain, health authorities and medical professionals are emphasizing the critical importance of donation and long-term patient care. During the ‘Castilla y León por la Vida’ awards in Valladolid, six donors from Soria were recognized across three age categories for their altruism.

Francisco del Amo Zarco, president of the Federation of Blood Donors of Castilla y León, warned that the healthcare system is facing critical reserve levels. He stressed the vital need to increase daily extractions, particularly plasma, to support chronic and oncology patients, and called for greater involvement from younger generations.

Separately, at the 24th National Pharmaceutical Congress, Beatriz Domínguez-Gil González, director of the National Transplant Organization (ONT), highlighted that the success of organ transplants depends heavily on post-operative management. She noted that the management of polymedication—the use of multiple drugs—is an extraordinary factor in patient survival and quality of life. The role of hospital and community pharmacists is considered essential in ensuring treatment adherence and managing complex drug interactions in transplant recipients.
