Blood donation and transplant care initiatives

Overview

Health authorities in Spain and Argentina continue to promote blood donation and improve medical support for transplant patients through various regional initiatives.

In Spain, medical professionals have warned of critical reserve levels. Francisco del Amo Zarco, president of the Federation of Blood Donors of Castilla y León, stressed the need to increase daily extractions, particularly plasma, to support oncology and chronic patients. To address these needs, several regional campaigns have been launched: the Servicio Canario de la Salud deployed a mobile unit to El Rosario, the Hospital Universitario de La Línea scheduled a walk-in donation day as part of the ‘Otoño, da el paso, dona sangre’ campaign, and Salamanca initiated a week-long campaign using mobile units to visit universities and commercial areas.

Regarding transplant care, Beatriz Domínguez-Gil González, director of the National Transplant Organization (ONT), emphasized that post-operative management is a “extraordinary factor in patient survival and quality of life.” She highlighted the essential role of pharmacists in managing polymedication and complex drug interactions to ensure treatment adherence.

In Argentina, the Instituto de Seguridad Social y Seguros in Chubut is conducting drives for surgeries and oncological treatments, including bone marrow registration in Oro Verde. Meanwhile, in Jujuy, the Instituto de Seguros de Jujuy has authorized 145 medical referrals to provide specialized care and transportation for complex cases, such as renal transplant controls, across provinces including Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Tucumán, and Salta.
