Spain regulates olive oil market amid high production forecasts
The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has established new marketing standards for the 2026/27 olive oil campaign to stabilize the sector. Following the publication of these rules in the Official State Gazette, the government has authorized an exceptional mechanism to regulate supply and prevent market distortions.
Projections indicate a significant increase in production, estimated at 1,602,596 tons, representing a 23% rise from the previous campaign. This surge is attributed to favorable spring weather conditions, including moderate temperatures and abundant rainfall. Additionally, initial stocks have grown by 23.3% compared to the previous year.
To manage this surplus, the Ministry may implement the withdrawal of a specific percentage of olive oil from the market or redirect it toward non-food uses. The exact percentage of product to be withdrawn will be determined by the Ministry before November 15. This measure is intended to be temporary and exceptional, aimed at maintaining market equilibrium.
