France and Spain wildfires force evacuation of over 250,000 people

In late July 2026 massive wildfires ripped through southwestern France (Gironde and Landes) and central Spain (Madrid, Ávila and surrounding regions). Extreme heat, prolonged drought and strong winds drove the flames, causing self‑generated whirlwinds that firefighters described as “erratic and unmanageable.” The blazes prompted the French government to mobilise the army and deploy A400M military transport aircraft equipped for retardant drops, while Spain declared a national emergency and coordinated fire‑fighting resources from across the EU.

More than a quarter‑million residents were ordered to leave their homes – roughly 197,000 in France and 70,000‑80,000 in Spain – with additional evacuations in Valencia, Toledo and other provinces. At least one fatality was confirmed in Spain (a man in his 70s) and two French firefighters died earlier in the week. Smoke from the fires drifted into Bordeaux, prompting health warnings and the evacuation of several elderly care homes in Ávila (601 people). Officials such as French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez warned that “we have never seen this, a self‑feeding fire of this magnitude,” and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the situation remained “complex.” The crisis highlighted the growing threat of climate‑driven wildfires across Europe.
