Spain expands cat welfare programs with supervised outings and capture‑sterilize‑release

Pet owners in Spain are increasingly adopting supervised outdoor experiences for domestic cats. Experts cite studies showing that controlled access to gardens or streets via harnesses, leashes or fenced “catios” boosts feline cognitive stimulation, reduces stress‑related behaviours such as furniture scratching, and improves physical health, including weight management. The approach balances safety with the animal’s natural exploratory instincts.

In the municipality of Talamanca de Jarama, the capture‑sterilize‑release (CES) method has been used since 2018 to manage stray cat colonies. The local volunteer team reports more than 270 cats have been sterilized and over 130 kittens placed for adoption, illustrating a coordinated effort to reduce stray populations while promoting humane care.
