Spain expands climate shelter network in Vigo and Malaga

The Spanish government has opened climate shelters in Vigo, using the waiting room of the foreign‑ers office and the Institute Social de la Marina. The facilities are free, accessible to people with reduced mobility and must keep a temperature of about 27 °C, but they are only open during normal office hours – 9:00‑14:00 in the foreign‑ers office and 11:00‑14:00 at the Institute. Security checks, including metal‑detector arches, are required, and the shelters currently lack drinking‑water dispensers.

In Malaga, four additional climate shelters have been activated at the Sub‑delegation, the Institute Social de la Marina, the Meteorological Centre and the Ceulaj youth centre in Mollina. These sites are part of the national Red de Refugios Climáticos created by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, fulfilling the State Climate Emergency Pact’s goal of providing safe, well‑distributed spaces to protect public health during extreme heat waves.
