Spain expands commercial voucher program to boost local retail spending
Municipalities across Spain are scaling up a commercial voucher scheme aimed at encouraging local consumption. The town of Massanassa opened enrollment for the 2026 campaign, offering €100 prepaid cards subsidised 50‑50 by the council, with a €16,000 budget and sales to begin on 7 September.
In the Balearic Islands, the regional government tripled the programme’s budget to €3.8 million and launched a second tranche of vouchers after demand outstripped supply. More than 60 % of participating merchants had exhausted their allocations, prompting the distribution of additional vouchers—190 in Mallorca, 233 each in Menorca and Ibiza, and 253 in Formentera. The initiative has generated €6.53 million in sales, delivering a €2.70 return for every euro spent on vouchers.
