Spain expands electric vehicle charging network to 52,746 points

Spain's public electric vehicle charging network has reached 52,746 operational points as of September 1, 2026, according to data from the Business Association for the Development and Promotion of Electric Mobility (AEDIVE). This represents a 5.49% increase compared to the end of 2025. The expansion is characterized by a significant shift toward higher-power infrastructure: ultra-fast charging points exceeding 350 kW grew by 10.38%, while those between 150 and 350 kW increased by 22.50%.

Concentration of the infrastructure is high in Catalonia, Madrid, Andalusia, and the Valencian Community, which together account for nearly 59% of the national network. Recent data adjustments by AEDIVE resulted in a reduction from July's recorded 57,000 points, a move attributed to the removal of inactive or outdated equipment that failed to meet new interoperability and payment system requirements.

In terms of capacity, Spain's installed power for electric car charging is reported at 2.26 million kilowatts (kW), which is 2.66 times the target set by the European Union. While the deployment of charging points is outpacing vehicle registrations—maintaining a ratio of one charging point for every nine electric vehicles—the country still faces challenges in meeting specific EU requirements for high-power charging clusters along major highway networks.
