Spain expands home-based palliative care services

Health authorities in Spain are expanding home-based palliative care services to improve the quality of life for patients with advanced illnesses, particularly those with oncological pathologies.

In Madrid, the regional government is adding seven new specialized teams to its home palliative care network. This expansion, expected to be fully operational by the final quarter of 2026, will bring the total to 56 teams managed directly by the Madrid Health Service (SERMAS). The network will consist of 171 professionals, including doctors, nurses, psychologists, and social workers, providing 24-hour coordination through the Regional Palliative Care Office.

In Tenerife, the Primary Care Management of the Canary Health Service has completed the implementation of its Home Palliative Care program across all basic health zones on the island. Since its launch in October 2024, the program has provided assistance to approximately 500 patients. The multidisciplinary team includes doctors, nurses, and social workers who coordinate care between home settings, health centers, and hospitals to ensure continuity of care.
