Spanish home-based palliative care expansion

Overview

Health authorities in Spain are expanding home-based palliative care services to support patients with advanced illnesses, specifically those with oncological pathologies.

In Madrid, the regional government is increasing its home palliative care network by adding seven new specialized teams. Scheduled to be fully operational by the final quarter of 2026, this expansion will bring the total to 56 teams managed by the Madrid Health Service (SERMAS). The initiative will employ 171 professionals, including doctors, nurses, psychologists, and social workers, with 24-hour coordination provided through the Regional Palliative Care Office.

In Tenerife, the Canary Health Service has completed the implementation of its Home Palliative Care program across all basic health zones on the island. Since its launch in October 2024, the program has assisted approximately 500 patients using multidisciplinary teams to coordinate care between homes, health centers, and hospitals.
