Spain extends border controls for Italian travelers until September 22

Spain has extended border controls for travelers arriving from Italy via air and sea until September 22. The decision, published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) and signed by Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, extends the current measures for an additional 15 days, effective from September 8.

The extension is a response to Italy's decision to prolong the suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain. This diplomatic friction originated in late July when the Italian government, led by Giorgia Meloni, suspended free movement with Spain citing “national security” concerns related to the migration crisis in Ceuta.

Spanish authorities have implemented these reciprocal controls due to what they describe as a “serious threat to public order and internal security.” The measure is subject to permanent evaluation and may be lifted earlier if the underlying threats subside. The current standoff involves both nations periodically extending their respective border restrictions in 15-day increments.
