Spain extends border controls for travelers from Italy
Spain's Ministry of the Interior has extended border controls for travelers arriving from Italy for an additional 15 days, until midnight on October 22. These controls apply to internal air and sea borders.
This marks the third extension of measures that originally began on August 8. The Ministry cited “reasons of urgency and a serious threat to public order” as the justification for the controls. The decision follows reciprocal measures from the Italian government, which implemented checks on travelers arriving from Spain after more than 72,000 people entered Ceuta.
The extension will be subject to permanent evaluation and may be lifted earlier if the threats that motivated the measures disappear or can be addressed through less restrictive means.
