Spain faces climate crisis amid wildfires and flood risks

Spain is facing a significant ecological crisis characterized by widespread wildfires and extreme weather events. By the end of August, wildfires had consumed 265,000 hectares, with over 115,000 people evacuated or confined due to fire risks by late July.

In response to the wildfire crisis, the national government has proposed a State Pact on fires to coordinate prevention, emergency management, and long-term recovery across different political administrations. However, the agreement has faced opposition from the People's Party, leading to political friction regarding long-term strategy.

In the Ebro Delta region, municipalities including La Ràpita, Deltebre, and L'Aldea are implementing a pilot emergency alert and management system. Managed through the DeltaGestió association, this tool integrates real-time meteorological data with local vulnerability information to provide precise, operational warnings for floods and other extreme weather events.
