Spain faces conflicting strategies to manage drought and water scarcity
Spain is facing diverse approaches to managing increasing water scarcity and drought. In Galicia, Environment Minister Ángeles Vázquez has proposed the construction of more reservoirs and increased study of groundwater to secure supply, noting that 32 municipalities are currently under alert due to dry spring and summer conditions.
In Leon, the Villameca reservoir is undergoing recovery works worth over 1 million euros awarded by the Duero Hydrographic Confederation. These works aim to ensure a storage capacity of 18.7 hectometers cubed to support local agriculture, though the region continues to face water deficits while awaiting the activation of the Villagatón dam.
Contrasting these infrastructure-heavy approaches, Greenpeace has urged the Spanish government to reject the ‘concrete policy’ of building new reservoirs and water transfers. The NGO advocates for prioritizing soil restoration, forest protection, and strictly maintaining ecological flows to address the water crisis structurally.
