Europe faces demographic pressure from aging populations
Europe is facing significant demographic challenges due to an aging population. According to Eurostat, the old-age dependency ratio in the European Union stands at 33.9%, with the eurozone at 34.3%. Spain reports a ratio of 30.8%, which, while lower than neighbors like Italy and Portugal, indicates growing pressure on healthcare and social services.
In Spain, the pension system is under increasing strain. Contributory pension costs have risen approximately 68% in the last decade, reaching over 14.4 billion euros in September 2026. This growth occurs as the baby boom generation begins to retire, complicating the sustainability of a system funded by current workers' contributions.
A study by Qida highlights that 71% of seniors and their families are willing to use personal assets to fund services that allow them to age at home. This preference is driven by a desire to maintain autonomy and avoid becoming a physical or emotional burden on family members. Meanwhile, recent legislative reforms in Spain regarding dependency and disability laws have been welcomed by sector representatives for reducing administrative delays.
