Spain faces rising motorcycle fatalities amid record vehicle registrations

Spain is experiencing a record surge in motorcycle and light vehicle registrations, with 154,152 units registered in the first half of 2026—a 24.3% increase compared to the previous year. This growth has positioned Spain as the second-largest European market for motorcycles, surpassing Germany and the United Kingdom.

Despite the rise in mobility solutions, road safety concerns are mounting. Motorcyclists now represent 16% of the Spanish vehicle fleet but account for 28% of road fatalities. Pere Navarro, Director General of Traffic (DGT), stated that the current mortality rates are “unacceptable,” noting that while vehicle sales have seen double-digit growth, the number of fatalities remains stagnant.

Navarro highlighted the inherent physical risks faced by motorcyclists, noting that unlike car drivers, they lack protective bodywork and passive safety features like airbags or crumple zones to absorb impacts, leaving them with a much smaller margin for error.
