During the summer of 2026, Spain saw a rise in road mortality, with 240 people dying in 218 fatal accidents during July and August—a 4% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Regional spikes were noted in the Valencian Community, where deaths nearly doubled, and in Castilla y León, which saw a 6% increase. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska characterized the period as ‘a bad summer,’ noting that an average of four people died on Spanish roads every day.
