Spain faces rising inflation and surging public debt costs

Spain is facing dual economic pressures from rising inflation and growing public debt. According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), the consumer price index (CPI) rose to 4.9% in September, up from 4.3% in August. Core inflation, which excludes more volatile components, reached 3.1% during the same period. The Bank of Spain has warned that inflation could approach 5% by the end of 2026, driven by energy costs and service price increases.

Simultaneously, concerns are mounting regarding the nation's public debt. Projections from Funcas indicate that interest payments on Spanish public debt are expected to surge significantly, rising from 40.3 billion euros in 2025 to over 60 billion euros by 2030. This increase in debt servicing costs poses a potential risk to public spending in other critical sectors, such as healthcare.
