Spanish economic inflation and public debt trends
Overview
Spain has faced simultaneous economic pressures from rising inflation and shifting public debt dynamics. In September, the consumer price index rose to 4.9%, with the Bank of Spain warning that inflation could approach 5% by the end of 2026 due to energy and service costs. At the same time, projections indicated that interest payments on public debt could rise from 40.3 billion euros in 2025 to over 60 billion euros by 2030.
By the end of August, data from the Bank of Spain showed that while absolute debt increased to 1.75 trillion euros, the debt-to-GDP ratio fell to 99.7%. This 3.1 percentage point reduction from the previous year suggests a potential trend toward meeting fiscal targets earlier than expected, with the government projecting the ratio could reach 99.3% by the end of 2026.
Detailed breakdowns of the August figures show the central government's debt at 1.598 trillion euros, or 91% of GDP, while Social Security debt rose 7.9% year-on-year to 136.177 billion euros. Regional autonomous communities reported a debt of 348.886 billion euros, a 2.5% increase, whereas local corporations saw a 7.1% reduction to 21.089 billion euros. While the government expects to hit its 99.3% target ahead of the original 2027 schedule, current projections do not specify when debt will fall below the 60% threshold required by European fiscal rules.
