Spain faces waste management challenges amid EU target deadlines
Spain is facing challenges in meeting European Union waste management targets. According to Circularis, a newly formed organization including companies such as Urbaser and FCC Enviro, the country requires at least 20 additional energy recovery plants to comply with EU mandates. Current data shows Spain sends 45% of urban waste to landfills, whereas the EU goal is to reduce this to 10% by 2035. Additionally, the recycling rate must reach 65%, while current figures stand at approximately 42.5%.
Failure to meet these milestones could result in significant fines from the European Commission. To address these issues, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has launched a new institutional campaign titled ‘When we throw trash where it doesn't belong, we are throwing money away.’ The initiative aims to raise public awareness regarding the economic costs of improper waste separation, noting that mixed waste is more complex and expensive to treat than properly sorted materials.
