Spain and France face severe wildfire crisis as hectares burned rise
Spain and France are facing significant wildfire challenges. In Spain, the Ministry for Ecological Transition reports that over 262,030 hectares have burned between January 1 and August 20, 2026, with 43 large fires recorded. Recent activity includes a major fire in Pinofranqueado affecting approximately 3,765 hectares and a fire in Villalcampo, Zamora, which forced the confinement of Ricobayo and road closures. In France, a wildfire in the Landes region burned approximately 1,600 hectares, requiring the mobilization of 550 firefighters and multiple aerial resources to manage the threat of nocturnal fire resurgence.
