Spain and France face severe wildfire crises
Spain is facing a severe wildfire season, with the Ministry for the Ecological Transition reporting that over 262,030 hectares have burned between January 1 and August 20, 2026. This period has seen 43 large-scale fires. Recent activity includes the Plan Infoex intervening in 32 incidents over one week, affecting approximately 4,212 hectares, with significant fires in Badajoz and Cáceres, including a 3,765-hectare blaze in Pinofranqueado.
In response to the ongoing crisis, the Generalitat Valenciana has increased its preventive surveillance workforce to 620 professionals, a 38% increase over three years. Meanwhile, in the Collserola Natural Park, new fires have triggered emergency evacuations and confinement orders for residents in the Torre Baró and Ciutat Meridiana neighborhoods of Barcelona.
In France, authorities have focused on massive preventive evacuations to protect populations from aggressive forest fires, notably in the Landes and Gironde regions. Greenpeace has called for an urgent state political pact and an annual investment of 1,000 million euros in Spain to bolster prevention and forest management.
