Spain's August forest fires spread across Ávila, Toledo, Huelva and Granada
A series of forest fires have affected several Spanish regions in August 2026. The blaze in Burgoyondo, Ávila – the largest in the country's history, burning more than 50,000 hectares – was declared stabilized on 12 August after the potential gravity index fell to 1. In Toledo, the fire at Almorox was fully extinguished, while firefighting continues in the pine area of Lucena, Huelva.
In the province of Cádiz, the San Roque fire forced the evacuation of 19 families and caused damage to at least one dwelling. The fire in Lecrín, Granada, prompted the regional government to declare an emergency phase 1, leading to the closure of a lane on the A‑44 motorway and the N‑323 road. Two helicopters, two cargo aircraft and 47 ground personnel with three fire engines were deployed to contain the blaze.
Urban incidents were also reported in Valladolid, where several small fires ignited in a day‑care centre, a school and a pallet‑sale business, prompting rapid police and fire response. In the villages of Oteruelo and Armunia (León), residents have taken to searching for a suspected arsonist after a series of deliberate‑suspicion fires.
Authorities continue to warn of high fire risk for the coming weekend, especially in northern and eastern peninsular zones and the Canary Islands, as strong winds and dry conditions persist.
