Spain wildfires burn over 254,000 hectares in 2026

Spain is facing a severe wildfire season, with the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) reporting that over 254,730 hectares have burned between January 1 and August 14, 2026. The country has recorded 42 large-scale fires, which account for approximately 88% of the total area affected.

In the Las Hurdes region of Cáceres, a major fire has destroyed roughly 2,200 hectares of vegetation. Authorities, including Extremadura Vice President Abel Bautista, suspect there is a 99 percent probability that this fire was intentionally set. The blaze has led to the evacuation of approximately 700 residents from ten towns.

Other significant incidents include the Las Peñas de Riglos fire in Huesca, which burned over 18,400 hectares, though conditions are stabilizing and residents from seven areas are beginning to return home. In Andalusia, the Niebla fire affected 38,000 hectares.

To combat these emergencies, state aerial resources have significantly increased their activity, completing 8,753 flight hours this year, a 78% increase compared to 2025.
