In early August 2026 the average price of gasoline in Spain rose to about €1.71‑€1.72 per litre, the highest level since the March peak that followed the Middle‑East conflict. Diesel reached roughly €1.84 per litre, also a record since mid‑April. The increase marks the fifth consecutive weekly rise, with cumulative price growth of close to 20 % since the temporary tax relief ended.

The rise is driven by the return of the standard 21 % VAT on fuel (after a three‑month reduction to 10 %) and a cut in the special hydrocarbon tax rebate from €0.15 per litre in July to €0.10 in August and €0.05 in September. As a result, filling a typical 55‑litre car tank now costs about €94‑95 for gasoline and €101‑102 for diesel – roughly €10‑16 more than a month earlier.

Industry groups such as the Confederación Española de Empresarios de Estaciones de Servicio (Ceees) have called the fiscal normalisation a “unnecessary setback” for motorists during the peak vacation period. Regional price differences persist, with the lowest gasoline prices still found in the Canary Islands, while the most expensive stations are in the Balearic Islands.
