Spain faces rising poverty and housing crisis, according to EAPN report
The XVI Report on the State of Poverty and Social Exclusion, released by the European Network Against Poverty (EAPN-ES), highlights a deepening socio-economic crisis in Spain, driven largely by housing costs and regional inequality.
Nationally, 25.7% of the population is at risk of poverty or social exclusion, with a strict monetary poverty rate of 19.5%. A significant geographic divide exists, with the southern half of the country facing a 26.5% risk compared to 14.1% in the north. Vulnerable groups include children under 18, who face a 36.8% risk, and women, who experience a higher exclusion rate (28%) than men (23.9%).
Regional data shows extreme disparities. Andalusia leads the nation in poverty indicators, with an AROPE rate of 34.7% and approximately 3 million people at risk. Castilla-La Mancha also faces high levels of vulnerability, with a 34% AROPE rate and a child poverty rate of 36.8%. In Castilla y León, the number of people at risk of poverty rose by 32,000 to reach 475,000.
Housing is identified as a primary driver of poverty. In Castilla-La Mancha, 63.7% of market-rate renters are at risk of poverty or exclusion. In the Community of Madrid, 9.9% of the population faces high housing expenditure, spending over 40% of their income on housing. Meanwhile, rental market volatility is increasing; in the Valencian Community, new housing decrees have reportedly led to 765 properties being withdrawn from the rental market in just ten days.
