Spain implements mandatory poultry vaccination amid Newcastle disease outbreaks

Authorities in Spain are intensifying measures to combat Newcastle disease in poultry populations. In Castilla-La Mancha, the regional administration has mandated vaccination for all production and reproduction poultry farms, effective October 1, 2026. This preventive measure follows epidemiological developments in neighboring regions and aims to mitigate the risk of virus introduction through domestic and wild bird movements and commercial trade.

In the region of Castilla y León, a new outbreak has been confirmed in Segovia at an organic broiler farm containing 4,400 birds. Veterinary services reported that the birds had not been vaccinated despite regional requirements. This incident marks the sixth outbreak in the province of Segovia and the 30th in Castilla y León, with Valladolid remaining the most heavily affected province.

Following the confirmation of a velogenic strain via PCR testing, officials initiated sanitary protocols, including the destruction of carcasses, feed, and contaminated materials. Restriction zones have been established around the affected site to control further spread.
