Spain implements new registration rules for electric scooters

New regulations for electric scooters have come into effect in Spain, introducing significant administrative and safety requirements. As of October 1, all electric scooters must be registered in the newly created Registry of Light Personal Vehicles (Registro de Vehículos Personales Ligeros) managed by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT).

This registration process, regulated by Royal Decree 52/2026, aims to identify vehicle owners, technical specifications, and mandatory civil liability insurance details. Once registered via the DGT electronic office, owners will receive a unique identification number that must be displayed on the scooter via a label, similar to the identification systems used for motor vehicles.
