Spain has implemented temporary border controls at airports and ports for travelers arriving from Italy. This measure, which is scheduled to remain in place until September 7, was introduced in response to Italy's refusal to lift Schengen area suspensions following a migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

According to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, over 1,000 travelers from 58 flights have been identified through document checks since the controls began. The majority of these checks occurred at Barcelona-El Prat and Madrid-Barajas airports. Authorities are conducting these checks selectively, targeting approximately 5-10% of passengers, with a focus on non-EU nationals.

The situation has triggered a diplomatic confrontation. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares criticized the Italian government's actions as being driven by 'electoral needs.' Meanwhile, the European Commission has expressed optimism that the situation will return to normal, noting that Spanish authorities have assured the EU that irregular arrivals in Ceuta will not have lasting repercussions on the Schengen area.
