Spain inflation rises to 4.3% amid surging energy and food costs

Spain is experiencing a significant rise in inflation, with the consumer price index (CPI) reaching 4.3% in August, up from 3.6% in July. This rate exceeds the Eurozone's harmonized inflation rate of 3.3%. The increase is driven by several factors, including rising energy costs due to international tensions, higher food prices resulting from adverse weather and agricultural costs, and unexpected price pressures in the technology sector caused by high demand for artificial intelligence components.

Specific household expenses are also rising sharply. According to research from CaixaBank, electricity bills in Spain increased by 20% in the third week of August compared to the same period last year, a trend influenced by both price hikes and higher consumption due to summer heatwaves. Additionally, spending on fuel rose by 21% during the same period, driven by higher oil prices and the expiration of certain tax reductions.
