Spain introduces new footwear and glove rules for scooter riders

Starting October 1, Spain will implement stricter safety regulations for operators and passengers of motorcycles, mopeds, and scooters. According to the Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), both the driver and any passenger must wear closed shoes that fully cover the foot. This means that sandals, flip-flops, and other open footwear will be prohibited.

Additionally, when riding on highways, both the driver and passenger are required to wear protective gloves. These measures are intended to reduce injuries in the event of an accident.

Violators face a fine of 200 euros, which is approximately 2,400 Norwegian kroner. However, the fine can be reduced to 100 euros if paid within 20 days.

In a related change to traffic flow, motorcyclists will be permitted to bypass car queues by using the right shoulder of the road on certain marked stretches, provided they do not exceed a speed of 30 kilometers per hour.
