Spain introduces new R‑120 traffic sign for low‑emission zones

The Spanish Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has added a new vertical sign, R‑120, to the national traffic‑sign catalogue. The circular sign with a red border and white background shows a black car emitting circles, indicating the prohibition of entry for motor vehicles without the required environmental label in Low‑Emission Zones (ZBE). The sign became mandatory for municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, insular territories, and towns over 20,000 residents where air‑quality limits are exceeded, as defined in Royal Decree 102/2011.

Drivers who ignore the sign commit a serious traffic offence and face a €200 fine, though no penalty points are deducted from the driving licence. The measure aims to improve air quality and adapt traffic regulations to newer vehicle technologies and mobility trends.
