Spain Issues Guidance on Pool Drowning Prevention
Spanish health authorities highlight that drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children under 14, with 30‑40 child fatalities each year. Most incidents involving children under five occur in private pools, while older youths often drown during water sports or alcohol‑related activities. The World Health Organization reports 236,000 global drowning deaths annually, and Spain recorded 140 deaths in 2022, including 57 so far this summer, with the Valencian Community, Andalusia, and the Balearic Islands most affected.
Experts advise immediate removal of the child from the water, positioning unconscious but breathing victims on their side, calling emergency services, and performing uninterrupted CPR until help arrives. Preventive measures include keeping children dry and warm, avoiding abdominal thrusts unless there is a clear airway obstruction, and encouraging swimming lessons from age four, as early instruction can significantly reduce drowning risk.
