Spain launches energy efficiency subsidies for hospitality and public buildings

New subsidy programs have been introduced in Spain to promote energy efficiency and decarbonization across the hospitality and public building sectors.

Under Royal Decree 638/2026, the hospitality sector can access grants ranging from 5,000 to 11,000 euros per establishment to upgrade equipment. This 15-million-euro fund aims to reduce energy consumption by facilitating the replacement of air conditioning units, appliances, and industrial machinery. Notably, the program excludes equipment that utilizes fossil fuels, such as natural gas. Applications are open from August 5 until September 30, 2026, though funds may be exhausted sooner.

Additionally, broader initiatives like the PREE program, supported by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, the IDAE, and European Union recovery funds, focus on the energy rehabilitation of public buildings. With the building sector accounting for approximately 30% of Spain's final energy consumption, these funds—exceeding 400 million euros—target improvements in thermal envelopes, lighting, and climate control. The goal is to combat energy poverty and modernize residential and public infrastructure, including schools and hospitals.
